Kaja Foglio
Kaja Foglio, born January 12, 1970, in Seattle, Washington, is a writer, artist, and publisher best known as the co-creator of the acclaimed webcomic and graphic novel series *Girl Genius*. She entered the comics field through her work as a letterer and writer, contributing to over 28 issues between 2001 and 2019, with her most frequent credits on *Girl Genius* and its spin-off *Girl Genius: The Second Journey of Agatha Heterodyne*. Foglio’s signature style blends intricate steampunk aesthetics with sharp, character-driven storytelling and a wry sense of humor. She collaborates closely with her husband, artist Phil Foglio, and together they built a devoted readership through serialized online publication. Their work earned the first Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story in 2009 for *Girl Genius, Volume 8: Agatha Heterodyne and the Chapel of Bones*, a milestone that helped legitimize graphic storytelling within the science fiction community; the series went on to win two more Hugos. Beyond her creative output, Foglio is a publisher, overseeing the series’ transition from webcomic to print. Her legacy includes pioneering digital-first storytelling and proving that independent, creator-owned comics can achieve both critical and commercial success.
