Kaare Bratung
1906–1985
Kaare Bratung was a Norwegian illustrator and comics artist, best known as a foundational figure in early Norwegian comics. He was born on July 5, 1906, in Bodø, Norway, and died in 1985. After graduating from the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in 1929, he entered the country’s fledgling comics scene alongside peers such as Ivar Mauritz-Hansen, Sigurd Winsnes, and Jens R. Nilssen. Bratung’s signature strips included *Dagros* and *Baldrian* for the newspaper *Nationen*, and *Professoren* for *Morgenbladet*. He also launched his own publication, *Se og les*, which ran for two years. His catalog credits span 85 issues from 1942 to 2014, with most-credited titles including *Norsk Barneblad*, *Dagros*, and *Familien*. Bratung worked as an artist, inker, letterer, and writer, often collaborating with other Norwegian creators of his era. His contributions helped shape the country’s early comic identity, though he never received major international awards. Today, he is remembered as a quiet but steady hand in Norway’s comic heritage.
