Jordan Mechner
Jordan Mechner was born on June 4, 1964, in the United States. He is best known as a pioneering video game designer and graphic novelist, celebrated for his cinematic approach to interactive media. While a student at Yale, Mechner designed and programmed the martial arts game *Karateka* (1984), which became a bestseller. Five years later, he created *Prince of Persia*, a platform game that utilized rotoscoping—a technique where Mechner filmed actors and traced over the footage to create fluid animation. The game spawned a long-running franchise, including a 2010 Disney film and ongoing Ubisoft video game series.
In 1993, Mechner founded Smoking Car Productions to direct the adventure game *The Last Express*, which later gained a cult following for its innovative interactive narrative. As an author, he wrote the *New York Times* bestseller *Templar* (2013), followed by *Monte Cristo* (2022) and *Liberty* (2023), collaborating with various illustrators. In 2023, Mechner made his debut as a writer-artist with the autobiographical graphic novel *Replay: Memoir of an Uprooted Family*, which won the Chateau de Cheverny prize for historical graphic novels.
Mechner received the 2017 GDC Pioneer Award and was named one of IGN's top 100 game creators of all time in 2009. His works frequently appear on lists of the most influential games.
