Joost Swarte
1947–
Joost Swarte was born on 24 December 1947 in Heemstede, Netherlands. A Dutch cartoonist and graphic designer, he is most closely associated with the *ligne claire* (clear line) drawing style—a term he himself coined. Swarte’s work spans a broad range of media: his comic series include *Katoen en Pinbal*, *Jopo de Pojo*, *Anton Makassar*, *Dr Ben Cine*, and *Niet Zo, Maar Zo*. However, he is equally known for his illustrations on stamps, posters, LP and CD covers, and for his magazine covers—most notably for the Dutch weekly *Vrij Nederland*, *The New Yorker*, the Belgian *HUMO*, and the Italian architecture magazine *Abitare*. His credited work in comics runs from 1971 to 2015, with prominent appearances in *El Víbora* and the collections *Coton + Piston*, *Measles*, and *Is That All There Is?*. Swarte’s precise, elegant linework and playful yet architectural compositions made him a key figure in European alternative comics and design. He has received major honors including the Stripschapprijs and the Dutch Prince Bernhard Culture Fund Award, solidifying his legacy as both a practitioner and a theorist of the clear line tradition.
