John Steven Wooley was born on April 4, 1949. A versatile writer and pop-culture historian, he is best known for his deep dives into the movies, music, and literature of the 1930s and '40s, as well as his work in comics, novels, and documentary filmmaking. His comic-book career, active from 1986 to 1991, saw him credited on 23 issues, notably co-creating *The Twilight Avenger* and *The Miracle Squad* series with artist Terry Tidwell. He also wrote titles such as *Spicy Tales*, *Plan 9 from Outer Space: Thirty Years Later*, and *Man-Frog*. Beyond comics, Wooley has written or co-written over 50 books, including the horror trilogy *The Cleansing* with Robert A. Brown, a biography of filmmaker Wes Craven titled *The Man, and His Nightmares*, and *Shot in Oklahoma*, which won the Oklahoma Historical Society's Best Book on Oklahoma History award for 2011. He co-produced the documentary *Tulsa Terrors* (2023) and has written for television, including the made-for-TV feature *Dan Turner — Hollywood Detective*. For 23 years, he was an entertainment writer for the *Tulsa World*, and his articles appeared in *Fangoria* and *TV Guide*. He also hosts *Swing on This*, a western-swing radio program on Tulsa's NPR affiliate. Wooley's legacy is that of a dedicated chronicler of regional and genre pop culture.
