John M. Burns
1938–2023
John M. Burns was an English comics artist whose career spanned from the late 1950s until his passing in 2023. Born in 1938, he died on 29 December 2023. Burns is best known for his elegant, detailed linework and sophisticated storytelling, particularly on the long-running newspaper strip *Modesty Blaise*, where he succeeded original artist Jim Holdaway. His clean, expressive style also graced adventure and crime series such as *Agent X9*, *Special-Comics*, *Trueno*, *Wham!*, and *Magnum*. Over his decades-long career, he was credited as artist, colorist, or inker on 62 issues, with his most prolific work appearing in the 1960s and 1970s. Burns collaborated with writers like Peter O'Donnell on *Modesty Blaise* and contributed to European and British comics markets, often bringing a cinematic flair to his action sequences. Though not a prolific creator of new characters, his visual interpretations of existing heroes and villains left a lasting mark. Later in life, he continued to work on reprints and special projects, and his legacy is celebrated for its craftsmanship and consistency. Burns received several industry honors, including the prestigious Eisner Award, recognizing his contributions to the art form.
