Joe Colquhoun
Joe Colquhoun was a British comics artist born on 7 November 1926, who died on 13 April 1987. He is remembered above all for his visually powerful work on *Charley's War*, the World War One serial that ran in *Battle Picture Weekly* and stands as one of the most critically respected stories in British comics history. His draftsmanship brought an unusual weight and authenticity to the trenches, making the strip far more than standard war-comic fare.
Colquhoun came up through the industry during the postwar boom in British comics, and his catalog reflects a long, prolific career stretching across titles including *Battle Action*, *Battle*, *Battle Action Force*, *Johnny Red*, and *Tiger* — a body of work spanning more than 275 credited issues between 1952 and 2018. Among his earlier distinctions, he was the original artist on *Roy of the Rovers*, the football strip that would go on to become one of the most enduring characters in British comics.
His line work was known for its gritty realism and detailed period research, qualities that proved especially well-suited to the war narratives he became associated with throughout his career. Though he worked largely within genre publishing rather than the prestige end of the market, the enduring reputation of *Charley's War* has secured his place as one of the defining artists of British comics' most productive decades.
