Jim Unger, born James Frederick Unger on 21 January 1937 in Britain, was a cartoonist who found his greatest success in Canada. He is best remembered as the creator of the syndicated comic strip *Herman*, which ran for 18 years and appeared in 600 newspapers across 25 countries. Unger passed away on 26 May 2012.

His path into comics began after he moved to Canada, where he developed a distinctive, deceptively simple style marked by deadpan humor and expressive, slightly off-kilter characters. *Herman* became his signature work, a single-panel strip that found comedy in everyday frustrations, misunderstandings, and the absurdities of modern life. Unger was the sole writer and artist for the strip, making his creative voice uniquely his own.

Over his career, his work was collected in volumes such as *Treasury of Herman* and *"It's Called 'Midnight Surrender,' Herman"*, and he contributed to titles like *Ehapa Taschenbuch* and *Lila Gorilla Cartoons*. He also appeared in the historical survey *An Introduction to Canadian Comic Books*. While he did not receive major industry awards widely recorded, his legacy endures through the enduring popularity of *Herman*, which has been reprinted and remains a touchstone of Canadian cartooning.
