Jim Holdaway

Jim Holdaway was a British illustrator born on 28 May 1927, whose relatively brief career left a lasting mark on European adventure comics. He died on 18 February 1970 at the age of 42.

Holdaway came up through the demanding world of British commercial illustration, developing a clean, confident line that suited the tension and glamour of action-oriented storytelling. His draftsmanship brought him work across a range of comic strips, with credits spanning artist, inker, and letterer roles — a breadth that speaks to his technical versatility.

His enduring reputation rests almost entirely on one assignment: the newspaper strip Modesty Blaise, scripted by Peter O'Donnell. The collaboration between Holdaway's sophisticated visual style and O'Donnell's sharp, character-driven plots gave the strip its distinctive tone, blending spy-thriller atmosphere with genuine emotional intelligence. Holdaway rendered the title character with a rare combination of elegance and physical authority that proved enormously influential on the adventure strip genre.
