Jim Cooper
Jim Cooper is best known as a letterer in comics, active from 1991 to 1993, with credits on 21 issues. He was born James Hayes Shofner Cooper on June 19, 1954, in the United States. His comics work appears primarily on titles such as *Stratonaut*, *Kimura*, *Stardusters*, *Foxfire*, *Serpentyne*, and *Bio 90: The Price of Blood*. Cooper’s lettering style supported the visual storytelling of these independent and small-press series, often collaborating with creators on genre-spanning projects that ranged from science fiction to fantasy. His contributions came during a period when lettering was still largely done by hand, requiring precision and an ear for dialogue rhythm. After his brief comics career, Cooper pursued a path far afield from the industry, becoming a lawyer, businessman, and professor, and eventually serving as a U.S. Representative for Tennessee from 1983 to 1995 and again from 2003 to 2023. In Congress, he was known for his work on military and oversight committees, and was described as a voice for civility. He did not seek reelection in 2022. Cooper’s legacy in comics remains that of a capable letterer whose work helped shape a handful of early-1990s independent titles.
