Jijé
1914–1980
Joseph Gillain, who worked throughout his career under the pen name Jijé, was born on 13 January 1914 in Belgium and died on 19 June 1980. He became one of the most versatile figures in European comics, contributing as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer across nearly four decades of active work.
Jijé is perhaps best remembered for his transformative role on *Spirou et Fantasio*, the beloved Franco-Belgian adventure strip that appeared in *Robbedoes* (the Dutch-language edition of *Spirou* magazine). Beyond his artistic stewardship of that series, he holds the particular distinction of having introduced Fantasio, one of the strip's enduring central characters. His influence on *Spirou* shaped the visual and narrative tone that later artists would build upon for generations.
Equally significant is his authorship of *Jerry Spring*, widely regarded as one of the first major western strips in European comics. The title demonstrated Jijé's range and his ability to bring authenticity and momentum to genre storytelling outside the humor-adventure tradition.
His credited work extended to titles including *Tanguy et Laverdure*, *Colt*, and *Luftens Ørne*, reflecting a career of remarkable breadth. Through his dual roles as originator and stylist, Jijé helped establish the visual grammar of postwar Belgian comics, and his influence on younger artists who passed through the *Spirou* stable remains a cornerstone of the medium's European heritage.
