Jef Nys
1927–2009
Jef Nys was a Belgian comic strip artist and writer, best known as the creator of the long-running children's series *Jommeke*. Born Jozef Nys on 30 January 1927 in Belgium, he began his career in advertising before turning to comics. His signature creation, *Jommeke*, debuted in 1955 and became a staple of Flemish comics, following the adventures of a young boy and his friends. Nys wrote, drew, and inked the series almost single-handedly for decades, producing hundreds of albums. He also worked on related titles such as *Peter + Alexander* and *De belevenissen van Jommeke*, which were published in multiple languages. Nys's style was clean, expressive, and family-friendly, emphasizing humor and gentle adventure. He collaborated occasionally with other artists but remained the primary force behind his work. Nys passed away on 20 October 2009 at age 82. His legacy endures through *Jommeke*'s continued popularity in the Netherlands and Belgium, and he is remembered as a key figure in Flemish comic history.
