Born on 10 August 1923 in France, Jean Graton spent nearly seven decades shaping the landscape of European adventure comics before his death on 21 January 2021. He is best remembered as the creator of Michel Vaillant, the racing-driver hero whose exploits launched as a series in 1957 and became one of the most enduring fixtures in Franco-Belgian comics.

Graton's career took shape in the early 1950s, and by 1953 he was contributing work across multiple publications. Over the following decades he accumulated credits on 429 issues as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer — a breadth of involvement that reflected genuine command of the entire comics-making process. Beyond Michel Vaillant, his most sustained presence was felt in titles such as Le Journal de Tintin, Tempo, Zack, Zack Parade, and Julie Wood, the last of which demonstrated his range beyond motorsport subject matter.

His signature achievement with Michel Vaillant was weaving authentic racing-world detail into accessible adventure storytelling, a combination that attracted devoted readership across generations. The series ultimately extended well past Graton's own active years, a testament to the world he built. Working across so many roles on a project — handling everything from pencils to lettering — gave his best-known work a cohesion that purely collaborative productions rarely achieve. Graton remained connected to the series into his final years, leaving behind a catalogue that continued to reach new audiences well into the 2020s.
