Jean-Claude Fournier
Jean-Claude Fournier, born 21 May 1943 in France, is best known as the cartoonist who took over the beloved series *Spirou et Fantasio* from 1969 to 1979. His path into comics began with a deep admiration for the medium; he started his career as an assistant to the legendary Franquin, which led to his selection as the new steward of the *Spirou* franchise. Fournier’s tenure is marked by a clean, dynamic ligne claire style and a willingness to introduce contemporary themes, such as environmentalism and social issues, into the adventures. He collaborated closely with writer André Franquin on early stories before fully scripting his own. Among his notable co-creations is the character of the villain Zorglub, though he also expanded the series’ world with new supporting figures. After leaving *Spirou*, Fournier continued to work in comics, creating the series *Les Crannibales* and *Le Poisson de l’angoisse*. His later life saw him recognized as a key transitional figure in Franco-Belgian comics. He received the Grand Prix de la Ville d’Angoulême in 2001, a career-spanning honor. Fournier remains active into his later years, with credits spanning from 1970 to 2024 across numerous international editions of his work.
