Jan Kruis
1933–2017
Johannes Andries Kruis was born on 8 June 1933 in the Netherlands and went on to become one of the most widely read Dutch comics artists of his generation, best known for the long-running family strip *Jan, Jans en de Kinderen* — published in English-speaking markets as *Jack, Jacky and the Juniors*. He died on 19 January 2017.
Kruis built a prolific career spanning more than five decades, with credits as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer across 952 issues between 1966 and 2017. His work appeared regularly in prominent publications including *Libelle* and *Kuifje*, the latter being the Belgian weekly that helped launch many significant European comics careers.
*Jan, Jans en de Kinderen* became his signature achievement — a warm, observational strip following the everyday life of a Dutch family that resonated broadly enough to be adapted and translated for multiple markets. The strip appeared in German as *Ulli, Ulla und die Kinder*, in French as *Jean, Jeanne et les enfants*, and in Swedish as *Familjen Svenssons äventyr*, reflecting its reach across European audiences.
Kruis worked across virtually every production role a comics creator can occupy, giving his strips a consistent, unified quality throughout their run. His contribution to mainstream European family comics over more than fifty years represents a quietly durable body of work.
