James Dean Smith
James Dean Smith is best known as the creator, writer, and artist of *Boris the Bear*, a hyper-violent, satirical comic that skewered the mid-1980s black-and-white boom. Born in an undisclosed location, Smith launched the series in 1986 as a direct response to the flood of anthropomorphic animal knock-offs inspired by *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles*. The titular bear, tired of these imitators, dispatched them with Rambo-style brutality, later taking aim at parodies of *Transformers*, Marvel heroes, *Swamp Thing*, and *Elfquest* before evolving into more character-driven stories. Smith handled art, inking, lettering, and writing across 42 issues from 1986 to 2004, with his most credited titles including *Boris the Bear*, *Boris' Adventure Magazine*, *Boris the Bear Instant Color Classics*, and *The Wannabe*. His style was raw, energetic, and unapologetically crude, perfectly suited for the series’ anarchic humor. Smith’s work stands as a time capsule of the indie comics scene’s self-referential, anti-establishment energy. He received no major awards, but his legacy endures among fans of offbeat, creator-owned comics. Smith passed away in 2008, leaving behind a cult classic that remains a pointed artifact of its era.
