Jacovitti
Benito Jacovitti was born on March 9, 1923, in Italy, and died on December 3, 1997. He is best known as a singularly inventive Italian comics artist whose work is instantly recognizable for its dense, surreal detail and macabre humor. Jacovitti entered the comics field in the late 1930s, developing a style that packed panels with absurdist gags, anthropomorphic sausages, and a cast of grotesque, expressive characters. His signature creation is the long-running series *Cocco Bill*, a parody of American Westerns, which he wrote and drew for decades. He also created *Zorry Kid* and *Tom Ficcanaso*, among others. Jacovitti’s work often featured a distinctive linework and a love of visual puns, making him a cult figure in European comics. He collaborated with writers like Luciano Giacotto but was primarily a solo artist. In his later life, he continued to produce strips and illustrations for Italian magazines and newspapers, leaving a legacy as one of the most idiosyncratic and influential cartoonists of the 20th century. He received the Yellow Kid Award at the Lucca Comics Festival in 1972.
