Jack Chick
Jack Thomas Chick was born on April 13, 1924, and died on October 23, 2016. An American cartoonist and publisher, he is best known for his fundamentalist Baptist "Chick tracts"—short, morality-driven comic strips that he used to express his views on a wide range of subjects. Over the course of his career, Chick's tracts frequently targeted Roman Catholics, Freemasons, Muslims, and other groups, often accusing them of conspiracies and violence. His work has been described as a blend of hate literature and fire-and-brimstone sermonizing.
Chick's path into comics was driven by his religious convictions rather than a background in art or publishing. He founded Chick Publications, which reports selling over 750 million tracts, comic books, videos, books, and posters, all designed to promote evangelical Protestantism from a fundamentalist perspective. His tracts have been translated into more than 100 languages. Among his most credited titles are *The Crusaders*, *The Greatest Story Ever Told*, *Somebody Goofed*, *Doom Town*, and *Happy Hour*.
Chick was an Independent Baptist who adhered to a dispensationalist view of the End Times and was a proponent of the King James Only movement, believing that all English translations of the Bible other than the King James Version are flawed. His legacy remains controversial, with his comics continuing to circulate widely online and in print long after his death.
