Ingrid Vang Nyman
1916–1959
Ingrid Vang Nyman (21 August 1916 – 13 December 1959) was a Danish illustrator best known as the original artist for Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking books. Born in Denmark, she studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts before beginning her career in illustration. Her distinctive, playful style—characterized by bold lines, vibrant colors, and expressive characters—defined the visual identity of Pippi Longstocking for generations. Beyond the books, Vang Nyman also adapted the stories into comic strips, which were later collected into comic book form. Her work on these comics appears in titles such as *Pippi*, *Pippi Longstocking Comics*, and several Swedish-language collections. Despite the global popularity of her Pippi illustrations, she remained relatively obscure compared to author Astrid Lindgren and did not receive commensurate recognition during her lifetime. She passed away at age 43 in 1959. In later years, her contributions have been increasingly acknowledged, and she has been honored with exhibitions and retrospectives celebrating her role in shaping one of children's literature's most beloved characters.
