Henryk Jerzy Chmielewski
Henryk Jerzy Chmielewski, widely known by his pen name Papcio Chmiel, was a Polish comic book artist and journalist born on 7 June 1923. A veteran of the Warsaw Uprising during World War II, he later found his calling as a graphic artist at the youth magazine *Świat Młodych*. In 1966, he launched his defining work, *Tytus, Romek i A'Tomek*, which follows the adventures of Tytus de Zoo, an anthropomorphic chimpanzee striving to become human. Chmielewski devoted nearly his entire career to this series, producing 31 main books through 2008, along with artbooks and spin-offs. His comics are marked by absurdist humor, puns, and wordplay, blending entertainment with education on Polish history, science, and the arts. He served as writer, artist, colorist, inker, and letterer on 33 cataloged issues between 1971 and 2008, with *Tytus, Romek i A'Tomek* and its companion volumes as his most credited titles. Chmielewski passed away on 22 January 2021, leaving a legacy as a beloved figure in Polish pop culture. He received numerous honors for his contributions to comics and children's literature.
