Harold R. Foster was a Canadian-American cartoonist celebrated for his meticulous draftsmanship and for creating the beloved comic strip *Prince Valiant*. Born Harold Rudolf Foster on August 16, 1892, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, he moved to the United States in 1921, settling in Chicago, where he began his illustration career and later became a citizen. In 1928, he launched one of the earliest adventure comic strips, adapting Edgar Rice Burroughs’ *Tarzan*. Nine years later, in 1937, he introduced his signature work, the weekly *Prince Valiant*, a fantasy adventure set in the Middle Ages. The strip showcased Foster’s dexterous, highly detailed artwork; he avoided word balloons, instead placing narration and dialogue in captions. Foster handled art and writing duties on the strip for decades, with his work appearing in collections such as *Prins Valiant* and *Prinz Eisenherz*. He died on July 25, 1982. His legacy endures through his influence on adventure comics and the continued reprinting of *Prince Valiant*, which earned him a place among the medium’s most respected artists.
