Greg Irons
1947–1984
Greg Irons was an American artist whose restless creativity spanned poster art, underground comics, animation, and tattooing. Born September 29, 1947, he made his mark in the counterculture of the late 1960s and 1970s. Irons’s comics work, active from 1970 until his death, is most associated with the underground anthology *Slow Death*, and he also contributed to titles like *Yellow Dog*, *Grunt*, *Rock 'n' Roll Madness Funnies*, *Skull*, and *Light Comitragies*. His style—detailed, grotesque, and often satirical—blended horror, psychedelia, and social commentary. He collaborated with other underground figures, though his most notable co-creations include the series *Skull* and *Slow Death*, where his visceral linework and dark humor stood out. After a stint in animation, Irons became a respected tattoo artist in San Francisco, influencing that craft as well. He died on November 14, 1984, at age 37, cutting short a multifaceted career. His legacy endures in the underground comix canon and tattoo history, though he never received major industry awards during his lifetime. Irons remains a cult figure whose work captures the raw, anarchic spirit of his era.
