Gipi
1963–
Gian Alfonso Pacinotti, who works under the pen name Gipi, is an Italian cartoonist, filmmaker, and author. Born in 1963, he is best known for his graphic novels that blend stark realism with a deeply personal, often melancholic tone. His path into comics began in the 1990s, and he quickly gained recognition for his expressive, loose ink-and-wash style, which he used to explore themes of war, memory, and adolescence. Among his most celebrated works are *Wish You Were Here*, *S.*, and *Aldobrando*, the latter a collaboration with writer Luigi Critone. He also created the autobiographical *Baci dalla provincia* and contributed to the Danish series *Børnenes jord* and the German *Aufzeichnungen für eine Kriegsgeschichte*. Gipi’s visual storytelling is marked by a raw, almost sketch-like quality that conveys emotional weight without sentimentality. His work has earned him major awards, including multiple wins at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. In later years, he has also directed films, further expanding his artistic range. Gipi remains a vital voice in European comics, known for his unflinching yet compassionate examinations of human fragility.
