Giovan Battista Carpi
Giovan Battista Carpi was a prolific Italian comics artist, illustrator, and teacher born on November 16, 1927, in Genoa. He died on March 8, 1999.
Carpi built his career largely within the world of Disney comics, contributing as artist, inker, and writer across nearly two hundred issues over several decades, with his work appearing most frequently in *Topolino*, *Almanacco Topolino*, and *I Classici di Walt Disney*. Though he occasionally turned his attention to Mickey Mouse, his energies were directed mainly toward Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck, characters whose comedic and adventurous registers suited his draftsmanship well.
His most enduring contribution to the Disney universe came through his collaboration with writer Guido Martina: together they created Paperinik, the costumed alter ego of Donald Duck who debuted in 1969 and went on to anchor numerous Italian Disney storylines. Beyond Disney, Carpi developed a range of original characters for Edizioni Bianconi — among them Geppo, Nonna Abelarda, and Soldino — demonstrating a versatility that extended well past any single publisher or franchise.
He also worked as a teacher, passing on craft knowledge to the next generation of Italian comics artists. Although no major individual awards are documented in the available record, his creative output left a substantial mark on Italian Disney comics that has kept his work in circulation long after his death.
