Gaetano Vitelli
Gaetano Vitelli was an Italian cartoonist best known as one of the pioneering artists to produce a Mickey Mouse comic strip in Italy. Born in Italy, he was active in the early decades of Italian fumetti, working primarily from the 1930s into the early 1940s. Alongside Giove Toppi and Antonio Burattini, Vitelli helped introduce Walt Disney’s iconic character to Italian readers, adapting the American strips for local publications. His credited work appears on 14 issues from 1933 to 1941, most notably for *Albi Grandi Avventure*, *Topolino (giornale)*, and *Topolino [Supplemento]*. Vitelli contributed as artist, inker, letterer, and writer, demonstrating a versatile hand in the early days of Italian comic production. His style reflected the clean, expressive linework typical of the period, suited to the adventure and humor serials of the time. Though his career was relatively brief, Vitelli’s role in establishing Disney comics in Italy left a lasting mark on the country’s comic landscape. Details of his later life and awards remain sparse, but his foundational work with the House of Mouse in Europe is recognized by historians.
