Frank Henry Temple Bellew, born April 18, 1828, in New York City, was an American artist, illustrator, and cartoonist whose work helped shape the visual language of 19th-century humor magazines. He is best remembered for his contributions to *Harper's New Monthly Magazine* and *The Comic Monthly*, where his lively, character-driven illustrations brought stories and satires to life. Bellew's path into comics began as a staff artist for periodicals, and he quickly became known for his energetic linework and keen eye for social caricature. Among his notable co-creations is the comic series *Adventures of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Thumb, at Home and Aboard*, a whimsical chronicle of the famous miniature couple. He also worked on *The Lantern*, a humor magazine of the era. Bellew collaborated with writers and editors of the day, though his name is most closely tied to the rise of illustrated journalism. He died on June 29, 1888, in New York City. While he did not receive major awards in his lifetime—formal comic honors were decades away—his influence is felt in the early development of American cartooning, bridging the gap between political caricature and sequential storytelling.
