Emilio Salgari was an Italian writer of action-adventure swashbucklers and a pioneer of science fiction, best known for his vast body of work that, in Italy, was more widely read than that of Dante Alighieri. Born on 21 August 1862 in Italy, he remains among the 40 most translated Italian authors in the 21st century. His path into writing led him to create some of the most popular novels of his era, which have been adapted as comics, animated series, and feature films. He is considered the father of Italian adventure fiction and Italian pop culture, and the "grandfather" of the Spaghetti Western. His signature style combined exotic locales with thrilling escapades, and his key collaborators included illustrators who brought his tales to life in comic adaptations. Notable co-creations include the iconic pirate Sandokan and the black corsair. Salgari died on 25 April 1911. His legacy endures through his influence on adventure storytelling and pop culture, with his works still adapted in various media today. While he did not receive major awards in his lifetime, his posthumous recognition as a foundational figure in Italian literature and comics is profound.
