Eduardo Teixeira Coelho
1919–2005
Eduardo Teixeira Coelho, born 4 January 1919 on Terceira Island in the Azores, Portugal, is best known as the artist behind the long-running adventure strip *Ragnar le Viking*. He began his career after moving to mainland Portugal, where his work for the magazine *Mosquito* starting in 1943 marked his first major success. In the 1950s, he relocated to Brazil, teaching at the Pan-American School of Art in São Paulo, before settling in France in 1955. There, he contributed extensively to *Vaillant* magazine, creating *Ragnar* and other series. Coelho’s style, detailed and dynamic, suited historical and adventure tales; he sometimes used the pseudonym Martin Sievre in his early days. Over decades, he collaborated with writers on titles such as *Cartouche*, *Ayak*, and *Os Doze de Inglaterra*, and his work appeared in collections like *La Découverte du monde en bandes dessinées* and *Mundo de Aventuras*. He died on 31 May 2005. While not a recipient of major awards widely recorded in English-language sources, his influence endures in European adventure comics.
