Ed Piskor
Ed Piskor was an American alternative comics cartoonist best known for his ambitious, meticulously researched works *Hip Hop Family Tree*, *X-Men: Grand Design*, and the *Red Room* trilogy. Born Edward R. Piskor Jr. on July 28, 1982, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he grew up immersed in both underground comix and mainstream superheroes. Piskor broke into the industry through self-publishing and small-press work, eventually gaining wider recognition for his dense, documentary-style storytelling. His signature approach combined a crisp, retro-inspired line with exhaustive historical detail, often compressing decades of narrative into single, packed pages. He collaborated frequently with fellow Pittsburgh cartoonist Jim Rugg, co-hosting the YouTube channel *Cartoonist Kayfabe*, where the pair dissected craft and comics history. Piskor co-created the sprawling *Hip Hop Family Tree*, a visual chronicle of rap’s early years, and the *X-Men: Grand Design* series, which distilled decades of mutant lore into a single, cohesive saga. In March 2024, he faced public accusations of sexual misconduct via social media. Piskor died on April 1, 2024, at age 41, hours after posting a suicide note defending himself against the allegations. His work earned multiple Eisner Award nominations and a devoted following for its singular synthesis of pop culture and comics history.
