Don Edwing
Don Edwing (1934 – December 26, 2016) was an American gag cartoonist best known for his long-running contributions to *Mad* magazine, where his work appeared for decades. Born in 1934, he developed a distinctive persona that matched his offbeat humor: he signed his cartoons as "Duck Edwing," often adding a small duck drawing, and even used duck calls on his answering machine. *Mad* editor John Ficarra noted that Edwing embodied the magazine's spirit, and Edwing himself once said he chose to specialize in being a "sick puppy," never deviating from that niche.
His career in comics spanned from 1975 onward, with credits as artist, inker, letterer, and writer across 16 issues. His most frequent appearances were in *Mad*, *Horror*, *Svenska Mad*, *Mad Special* (also known as *Mad Super Special*), *Norsk Mad*, and *Plop!*. While his work was primarily gag cartoons rather than serialized stories, his signature style—wry, absurd, and irreverent—made him a fixture of the magazine's golden age of satire. He collaborated closely with *Mad*’s editorial team, including Ficarra, and his cartoons often stood out for their deadpan delivery.
Edwing’s legacy is that of a specialist who found a perfect home for his humor. He remained active in the industry until his death on December 26, 2016, leaving behind a body of work that defined a certain strain of American comic satire.
