Beyond his own art, Kitchen became a pivotal figure in independent comics through his publishing imprint, Kitchen Sink Press, which released seminal works such as *Kitchen Sink Classics*. He also co-founded the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a nonprofit that protects the First Amendment rights of comics professionals. His collaborations included working with Will Eisner on *Will Eisner's Quarterly* and nurturing the careers of underground legends.

Kitchen’s legacy is defined by his dual role as a creator and a champion of creator rights. He received multiple industry honors, including the Inkpot Award, for his contributions to the medium. He remained active in comics until his death, leaving a lasting impact on the business and legal landscape of the art form.
