David A. Trampier (April 22, 1954 – March 24, 2014) is best remembered as the artist whose work defined the look of early Dungeons & Dragons. His most famous piece, the cover of the original *Player's Handbook*, became one of the most recognizable images in tabletop gaming. Born in the United States, he entered the field through TSR, Inc., where his detailed, dramatic fantasy illustrations appeared in some of the game's earliest rulebooks and modules. He also created and wrote the long-running comic strip *Wormy* for *Dragon* magazine, blending humor with adventure.

At the height of his influence in the late 1980s, Trampier abruptly left the gaming industry and became a recluse. The reasons for his departure remain unclear, though a dispute with TSR is suspected. For decades, his whereabouts were unknown, fueling rumors of his death—denied by his brother-in-law, fellow artist Tom Wham. Trampier consistently refused any contact with TSR or its later owner, Wizards of the Coast.

Though his active career was brief, his work left a lasting mark. He was posthumously inducted into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design Hall of Fame in 2024, during its 50th anniversary. Our catalog credits him as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on 26 issues, primarily for *Dragon Magazine*.
