Dashiell Hammett

Dashiell Hammett was born Samuel Dashiell Hammett on May 27, 1894, in St. Mary's County, Maryland, and died on January 10, 1961, in New York City. He is best known as the American writer who defined the hard-boiled detective novel, creating indelible characters such as Sam Spade, Nick and Nora Charles, and the Continental Op. His path into writing began after stints as a Pinkerton detective and an advertising manager, experiences that lent gritty authenticity to his prose. Hammett's signature style—lean, cynical, and taut—revolutionized crime fiction and deeply influenced the film noir movement. His novels *The Maltese Falcon*, *Red Harvest*, *The Glass Key*, and *The Thin Man* are cornerstones of the genre, with *Red Harvest* later named to *Time*'s list of the 100 best English-language novels. In comics, he co-created the newspaper strip *Secret Agent X-9* with artist Alex Raymond, which ran from 1934 and is his primary credited work in the medium. The Crime Writers' Association and Mystery Writers of America have repeatedly honored his novels among the greatest ever written. Hammett's later years were marked by blacklisting during the Red Scare due to his political activism, but his legacy as the dean of hard-boiled fiction remains secure.
