Daniel Hulet
1945–2011
Daniel Hulet was a Belgian cartoonist best known for his detailed, atmospheric artwork on the historical series *Pharaoh* and the post-industrial trilogy *Morbid State*. He was born on 25 August 1945 in Etterbeek, Belgium, and died on 9 September 2011 in Ostend. After starting his career in advertising, Hulet contributed to the famed weekly comics magazines *The Adventures of Tintin* and *Spirou*. In 1980, he launched *Pharaoh* with writer André-Paul Duchateau. Five years later, he joined the monthly *Lived*, where he created *The Paths of Glory* with Jan Bucquoy. For publisher Glénat, he began *Morbid State*, a trilogy set in a post-industrial world, in 1987. Hulet returned to *Pharaoh* in 1996, and in 2003 moved to Casterman to produce the series *Extra-Muros*. His work is characterized by a clean ligne claire style applied to both historical epics and dystopian futures. Across his career, he served as artist, colorist, inker, and writer on 37 issues, with his most credited titles including *Pharaon*, *Les chemins de la gloire*, and *Extra Muros*. He received no major awards listed, but his consistent, professional output over three decades has earned him a respected place among European comic artists.
