Dame Darcy
Dame Darcy (born Dame Darcy Pleasant, June 19, 1971) is an American alternative cartoonist, fine artist, and performer best known for her long-running comic series *Meat Cake*. Published by Fantagraphics from 1993 to 2008, the series established her signature Neo-Victorian aesthetic—a blend of gothic whimsy, macabre humor, and intricate, doll-like linework. She emerged from the 1990s alternative comics scene, contributing to anthologies like *Twisted Sisters Comics* and later working on *Tomorrow Stories*. Her work often features recurring characters such as the mermaid-like Strega Pez and the zombie-like Effluvia. In 2016, the comprehensive collection *The Meat Cake Bible* was released, earning an Eisner Award nomination the following year. Darcy also illustrated *Vegan Love*, which won a Silver Medal at the 2018 Independent Publisher Book Awards. Beyond comics, she has worked as a musician, cabaret performer, and animator. Her distinctive style and world-building have made her a cult figure in alternative comics, with her influence felt in the intersection of underground cartooning and Victorian-inspired gothic culture.
