Crusty Bunkers

The Crusty Bunkers were a collective pseudonym used by a rotating group of inkers working at Neal Adams' and Dick Giordano's Continuity Studios in New York City from 1972 to 1977. The name—sometimes credited as Ilya Hunch, Chuck Bunker, or The Goon Squad—covered the collaborative work of artists who later built notable solo careers. The group contributed to DC and Marvel titles, with their inking and coloring appearing on series such as *Earth 4*, *Marvel Premiere*, *Doctor Strange*, and *Dracula Lives*. Their style was defined by the energetic, polished linework typical of the Adams studio, blending realism with dynamic composition. Decades later, Adams opened Neal Adams Crusty Bunkers Comics and Toys in Burbank, California, around 2020, managed by his son Joel Adams. The store sold exclusive variant covers under the "Crusty Bunker" banner, keeping the name alive until its closure between 2024 and 2025. While the collective itself won no major awards, its members—including future luminaries like Terry Austin and Bob Wiacek—helped shape the look of 1970s superhero comics. The Crusty Bunkers remain a footnote in industry history, representing a unique era of collaborative craftsmanship.
