Colin Upton
1960–
Colin Upton was born on April 2, 1960, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he became a fixture of the city’s alternative comics scene. Best known for his self-published minicomics, Upton’s work also appeared through commercial publishers like Fantagraphics Books and in anthologies such as *Drippytown Comics & Stories*. His most credited titles include *Buddha on the Road*, *Colin Upton's Other Big Thing*, *Self-Indulgent Comics*, *Real Rubbie*, *Real Stuff*, and *Xxxenophile Presents*, with his active period spanning 1986 to 1998. Upton’s style is raw and personal, often blending autobiography with surreal or observational humor. He co-hosted the *Inkstuds* radio program on CITR-FM at the University of British Columbia, and since the mid-1980s, he performed as a member of GX Jupitter-Larsen’s noise band/performance art troupe The Haters, whose concepts inspired his *Happy Hater* minicomics. Upton’s legacy lies in his influence on the Canadian small-press and minicomic movement, championing DIY ethics and intimate storytelling. He has not been recognized with major industry awards, but his contributions remain valued among underground comics enthusiasts.
