Charles Henry Ross, born in 1835 and passing on 12 October 1897, was an English writer and cartoonist best remembered as the creator of Ally Sloper, one of comic strips' earliest recurring characters. Ross worked primarily in the late 19th century, with his most active period in comics spanning from 1870 to 1884. He is credited as writer on 23 issues, most notably for the humor periodicals *Judy* and *Ally Sloper's Half Holiday*, as well as the collection *Some Playful Episodes in the Career of Ally Sloper*. His signature creation, the scheming, top-hatted Sloper, first appeared in *Judy* before graduating to his own weekly, *Ally Sloper's Half Holiday*, which Ross wrote and illustrated. The strip’s blend of social satire and slapstick, with Sloper’s constant dodging of rent and creditors, proved a commercial success. Ross collaborated with his wife, Marie Duval, who also drew the character, though Ross remained the primary writer. After his death, Ally Sloper continued under other hands, but Ross’s foundational work established a template for British comic strips. His legacy lies in pioneering serialized character-driven humor, though he received no major awards in his lifetime.
