Charles Dickens was an English novelist and journalist, best known for creating some of literature's most memorable characters and for shaping the Victorian novel through serial publication. He was born on February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth, England, and died on June 9, 1870. Dickens left school at age 12 to work in a boot-blacking factory after his father was imprisoned for debt, an experience that informed his lifelong advocacy for children's rights and social reform. He began his career as a journalist, and his breakthrough came in 1836 with the serialized *The Pickwick Papers*, whose popularity made him an international celebrity. His novels, including *Oliver Twist*, *David Copperfield*, and *Great Expectations*, were published in monthly or weekly installments, a format that allowed him to gauge reader reactions and adjust his plots accordingly. The 1843 novella *A Christmas Carol* remains one of his most enduring works, inspiring countless adaptations. Dickens also edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote hundreds of short stories and nonfiction articles, and performed public readings. His keen observation of character and society, combined with humor and satire, earned him recognition as a literary genius. In the comics medium, his works have been adapted extensively, notably in the *Classics Illustrated* series, where he is credited as writer on 78 issues spanning from 1942 to 2023.
