Carlo Peroni

Carlo Peroni, born on 29 November 1929 in Senigallia, Ancona, was an Italian cartoonist who spent more than six decades crafting warmly humorous comics for readers of all ages. He died on 13 December 2011.

His professional life began unusually early and in an unexpected direction: from 1946 he worked as a restorer and icon painter before pivoting toward illustration. By 1948 he had begun contributing to the beloved children's magazine *Il Giornalino*, a relationship that would prove central to his career for decades. Over the years he also supplied work to *Corriere dei Piccoli*, the sports weekly *Guerin Sportivo*, and the German publications *Bild-Zeitung* and *Zack Lach Box*, demonstrating a reach that extended well beyond Italy. He additionally collaborated with the Italian public broadcaster RAI and authored several books.

Peroni worked almost exclusively in humor, and his most enduring characters reflect a gift for gentle, character-driven comedy. Among his original creations were Gianconiglio (released internationally as Sonny), Zio Boris, Nerofumo, Paciocco, and the self-referential Ispettore Perogatt — a pen name he adopted and made his own. He also founded and edited the comics magazine *Slurp!*. Across roughly 155 credited issues as artist, colorist, inker, and writer, Peroni left a quietly distinctive mark on European humor comics.
