Bill Griffith
1944–
Bill Griffith, born William Henry Jackson Griffith on January 20, 1944, is an American cartoonist best known for his surreal daily comic strip *Zippy*, which introduced the enduring catchphrase "Are we having fun yet?" He signs his work both Bill Griffith and Griffy. Griffith emerged from the underground comix movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s, publishing with major alternative houses such as Print Mint, Last Gasp, Rip Off Press, Kitchen Sink, and Fantagraphics Books. He co-edited the influential anthologies *Arcade* and *Young Lust*, and his work appeared in *National Lampoon*, *High Times*, *The New Yorker*, *The Village Voice*, and *The New York Times*. Over a career spanning from 1970 to 2025, he has been credited as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on 86 issues, with his most frequent titles including *Zippy Quarterly*, *High Times Magazine*, *Zippy Annual*, *Zippy Stories*, *Tales of Toad*, and *Pox*. Griffith’s signature style blends deadpan absurdity with sharp social commentary, and his legacy is that of a singular voice in American comics, bridging the underground era and the alternative mainstream.
