Berke Breathed

Berke Breathed was born Guy Berkeley Breathed on June 21, 1957, in the United States. He is best known as the creator of the newspaper comic strip *Bloom County*, which ran from 1980 to 1989 and earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1987. Breathed’s path into comics began in college, where he drew for the student newspaper, and his early work quickly gained national syndication. His signature style blends sharp political satire with absurdist humor, often featuring characters like the penguin Opus and the lawyer Steve Dallas. He later created the spin-off strips *Outland* and *Opus*, and also wrote and illustrated children’s books.
