Barly Baruti, born Baruti Kandolo Lilela on December 9, 1959, in Kisangani, Congo-Léopoldville (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), is a Congolese cartoonist recognized as the DRC’s most internationally known comics creator. He began his career in the 1980s, contributing to local publications before gaining wider exposure through European publishers. Baruti is best known for his detailed, expressive linework and atmospheric storytelling, often blending African settings with European-style adventure narratives. His signature work includes the series *Mandrill*, a crime thriller co-created with writer Stephen Desberg, and *Mevrouw Livingstone*, a historical adventure. He also illustrated *Moord en doodslag* and *Mord und Totschlag*, further showcasing his versatility in noir and action genres. Baruti’s style is marked by dynamic panel layouts and a keen eye for character expression, earning him collaborations with European writers while maintaining a distinct Congolese perspective. Later in his career, he continued to produce work for both African and European audiences, and his legacy is cemented as a pioneering figure in African comics. He has received recognition for his contributions, including being featured by the BBC as the Congolese author best known outside his country.
