Dark Horse has always had a knack for the offbeat, and Walter — debuting in his own self-titled series in 1996 courtesy of the sharp creative pairing of John Arcudi and Doug Mahnke — is a prime example of that indie spirit at full throttle. Arcudi's ear for darkly comic storytelling and Mahnke's visceral, expressive linework made them one of the most distinctive duos of the Modern Age, and whatever Walter is, he's clearly their creation through and through. With only a handful of catalog appearances, he's a rare find — the kind of cult curiosity that rewards the collector willing to dig a little deeper into Dark Horse's wonderfully strange corners of the '90s.
