Who is Uncle Elmo?
A supporting player in the sunny, slapstick world of Popeye's comic book adventures, Uncle Elmo made his debut in Popeye #56 in 1960, brought to life by the great Bud Sagendorf — the artist and writer who lovingly shepherded E.C. Segar's spinach-loving sailor into the Silver Age. His handful of appearances across Western Publishing's Popeye titles put him in wonderfully colorful company: Olive Oyl, Wimpy, little Swee'Pea, and the one-eyed sailor himself all share the page with him. A rare find for the dedicated Popeye collector, Uncle Elmo is exactly the kind of charming, blink-and-you'll-miss-him character that makes digging through Silver Age funny-book back issues such a rewarding adventure.
