the Jeep
Eugene the Jeep is a mysterious small animal from the Fourth Dimension who appears in E.C. Segar's Popeye comic strip. Able to move between dimensions and predict the future, the Jeep can only say one word: 'Jeep.'
Few creatures in comics history carry quite the mystique of the Jeep, a wonderfully strange little being who first bounded onto the page in 1937, conjured into existence by the singular genius of E. C. Segar during the Platinum Age of the medium. Published under the David McKay banner across nearly a quarter century, the Jeep moves through a world populated by some of comics' most beloved and eccentric figures β Popeye, Olive Oyl, Wimpy, and Swee'Pea among them β which is about as charming a neighborhood as four-color funny pages can offer. With a key collector's issue to its name and appearances stretching from the late 1930s well into 1961, this peculiar little character is a genuine artifact of comics' earliest era, a reminder of just how inventive and gloriously weird Segar's imagination truly was.
