Roger the Homunculus
Roger is a homunculus—an artificial man created through alchemical means—discovered dormant in Europe and reactivated when Hellboy connected a human heart to his chest cavity, bringing him to life. He subsequently became entangled with the B.P.R.D.'s investigations into the paranormal.
Conjured into comics by the singular Mike Mignola in 1999, Roger the Homunculus is one of the most distinctive presences in the richly strange world of Dark Horse's Hellboy universe. Debuting in Hellboy: Box Full of Evil #2, this Modern Age oddity went on to share pages with some of the most beloved paranormal figures in comics — Hellboy, Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and Lobster Johnson among them — and carved out a notable role in B.P.R.D.: Hollow Earth. Over a span of more than two decades, Roger became endearing enough to earn his place even in the charming, all-ages Itty Bitty Hellboy spinoffs, proof that a character can be genuinely weird and genuinely beloved in equal measure. If you're exploring the sprawling, monster-haunted corners of Mignola's mythology, Roger is exactly the kind of unforgettable figure who makes that world so worth inhabiting.
