Who is Megg?

Megg is a witch created by cartoonist Simon Hanselmann, living in a chaotic, drug-hazed household with her cat-boyfriend Mogg, the raucous Werewolf Jones, and the hapless Owl. Her stories mine dark humor and raw emotion from mundane, often self-destructive everyday life.

A bleary-eyed, deeply human creation from the Modern Age of alternative comics, Megg burst onto the Fantagraphics scene in 2014 courtesy of cartoonist Simon Hanselmann, whose raw and darkly funny sensibility made an immediate impression on the literary comics world. She inhabits a slovenly, emotionally tangled universe alongside Mogg, Werewolf Jones, and Owl across celebrated volumes like Megahex, Megg & Mogg In Amsterdam and Other Stories, and One More Year β€” a run that lasted into the 2020s and cemented her place as one of the more distinctive voices in contemporary underground-inflected comics. Hanselmann's work sits proudly in the Fantagraphics tradition of uncompromising, adult alternative fiction, and Megg is very much its battered, beguiling heart.
