Mantis
Mantis is a servant of Darkseid and a powerful New God from Apokolips, introduced as part of Jack Kirby's Fourth World saga. A fearsome insectoid warrior, he commands energy-based powers and serves among Darkseid's elite forces opposing the heroes of New Genesis and Earth.
Born from the cosmic imagination of Jack Kirby himself, Mantis made his debut in The New Gods #2 in 1971, arriving at the dawn of the Bronze Age as part of Kirby's sweeping, mythic Fourth World saga for DC Comics. He's a figure who keeps extraordinary company β sharing pages with Darkseid, Orion, Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern β which tells you everything about the grand scale on which this character operates. Documented across more than five decades and enshrined in Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe, Mantis is a genuine piece of comics history, a Kirby original whose presence in any collection carries the weight of one of the medium's most visionary eras. Collectors hunting key Bronze Age cornerstones will want to note that at least one of his appearances carries recognized key-issue status β reason enough to dig in.
