Who is Kung Lao?

Kung Lao is a Shaolin warrior and champion of Earthrealm, distinguished by his razor-edged hat, who fights in the deadly Mortal Kombat tournament. A descendant of the Great Kung Lao, he carries his ancestor's legacy into battle against Outworld's forces.

Stepping out of the brutal Mortal Kombat tournament and onto the comics page, Kung Lao made his debut in 1994's Mortal Kombat: Goro, Prince of Pain #1, brought to life by Mark Paniccia and Roy Burdine under Malibu Comics' mid-'90s push to translate one of gaming's most iconic franchises into sequential art. A product of the Copper/Modern Age, he carved out his place across titles like Mortal Kombat: Battlewave and Mortal Kombat, sharing those blood-soaked pages with a murderers' row of fan favorites — Sub-Zero, Kitana, Baraka, Reptile, and Jax. With only 14 catalog appearances across a short but punchy publishing run, Kung Lao is a genuine collector's find — a snapshot of that electrifying moment when Malibu dared to bring Outworld's chaos to comic shop shelves.
